The Roxbury Municipal Alliance Committee (ROMAC) supports and
implements several programs within the Roxbury community. These
programs are funded by Drug Enforcement Demand Reduction (DEDR)
fines, "in-kind" donations of materials and services by many businesses,
organizations and interested citizens, and special grants when available.

D.A.R.E. - ROMAC supports the local D.A.R.E. program offered in local
elementary schools. This is a nationally recognized educational program
conducted by local police officers, teaching elementary school children the
facts about alcohol and other drugs of addiction, including nicotine. It also
exposes children to healthy ways to cope with peer pressure and everyday
problems that could lead them to substance use/abuse.

PROJECT GRADUATION - Roxbury Project Graduation is conducted
annually to provide a drug-free recreational environment in which to
celebrate the graduation from high school. Students are taken to a
recreational facility the evening of graduation, where many planned and
supervised recreational/social activities take place. The next morning they
change locations to enjoy breakfast and entertainment by a
hypnotist/illusionist. Funding for this event comes from local contributions
and fund-raisers organized by the volunteer committee. ROMAC makes a
monetary contribution to this most worthwhile activity.

ALCOHOL, TOBACCO AND OTHER DRUG (ATOD)
AWARENESS PROJECT -
The activities for this program include
providing brochures and pamphlets in multiple Roxbury locations, including
the Department of Health, Recreation Department, Municipal Building and
Library. It also includes the development of a lending video library on ATOD,
the development of this website, linked to strategically similar sites, such as
the Roxbury Police Department, the Roxbury Chamber of Commerce and
Treatment-based facilities. This program has made it possible to post
"tobacco-free zone" signs on local school properties and provide
interactive, educational place mats to local eateries twice a year. It also
provides for free community-based presentations on ATOD issues. All of
these activities are designed collectively to be accessible to all 30,000
Roxbury residents.

TOBACCO EDUCATION PROGRAM - ROMAC supports the
Roxbury High School program of psycho-educational groups and
awareness activities on the subject of tobacco use issues. This program
utilizes cross-age teaching by peer leadership participants and is led and
supervised by the Student Assistant Coordinator (SAC).

RED RIBBON WEEK - ROMAC sponsors this nine-day period, October
23-31, during which local elementary and high school students focus on
ATOD prevention issues. This includes a poster contest at the elementary
and middle school level, judged by ROMAC personnel. There are various
incentives for participation in this nationally recognized program and prizes
for winning entries. Preparation begins with the use of promotional
materials distributed at the local street fair in early September.

PEER LEADERSHIP DEVELOPMENT PROGRAM - This program
provides peer leadership training opportunities for middle school and high
school students. Activities include scholarships offered for students to
attend special training programs offered by the Teen Institute of the Garden
State (TIGS) and the Willow Tree Training (WTT).

SAVVY SENIORS - Savvy Seniors is a program designed to present
interactive activities to senior citizens on the issues of substance abuse that
may be confronting them or other members of their family. This program
includes the use of educational and incentive materials. The activities are
presented in a social setting such as a luncheon or special theme party.

OPERATION PRE-SCHOOL - This unique program provides
age-appropriate educational information to preschool-aged children at local
preschools or daycare centers on ATOD prevention-oriented issues.
Corresponding activities and information are offered to parents as well.
