ROMAC is your Roxbury Municipal
Alliance Committee. It was established
in 1989 by the Roxbury Township
Committee to serve the community with
the mission of providing programs on
alcohol, tobacco, drug abuse and
violence prevention. We do this by
creating and funding programs and
activities that will help accomplish this
mission.  ROMAC is funded by Drug
Enforcement Demand Reduction
(DEDR) fines. Annual grants are
awarded by the Department of Human
Resources of Morris County for our
programs and activities. One-fourth of
the grant is provided by the township.
Many businesses, organizations and
individuals donate "in-kind" services to
help us fulfill our mission.

ROMAC is made up entirely of
volunteers.

ROMAC is your community voice for
issues involving the prevention of
alcohol, tobacco and other drug abuse in
the Roxbury community.

ROMAC makes a difference in the fight
against alcohol, tobacco and other drug
abuse.

MELL, ROMAC  helping Roxbury become a better place

By Lisa Martone - Special to Randolph Roxbury This Week

Jim Mell doesn't consider himself a hero.  He gives all the credit to his team of about
30 locals who do what they can to make Roxbury a better place.

"This is a group of people who care about the community and throughout the years
have worked diligently and selflessly for the community," Mell said.

Mell speaks highly of the group he chairs, the Roxbury Municipal Alliance Committee
(ROMAC).

The group, like many other alliances in the surrounding area, is dedicated to
providing programs on alcohol, tobacco, drug abuse and violence prevention.

It is made up of police officers, school system employees and board of education
members, local business owners and residents who volunteer their time.

Programs the group help fund include D.A.R.E;  Project Graduation; Alcohol,
Tobacco and other Drug (ATOD) Awareness; Peer Leadership Development
programs; SAVVY Seniors and Operation Pre-School.

Most of these programs focus on preventing children from smoking tobacco, drinking
alcohol or trying drugs, but the programs stretch from pre-school age to senior
citizens.

Operation Pre-School provides age appropriate early education on the dangers of
tobacco, alcohol and drugs.

ROMAC also reaches out to senior citizens in town.  The SAVVY Senior Program is
designed to present interactive activities on the issues of substance abuse.

"We have a lot of great programs or all ages," Mell said.  "We financially support
programs like Project Graduation, and then we create our own and fund them, like
the SAVVY Seniors or Operation Pre-School."

Funding for all of ROMAC's programs come from the Drug Enforcement Demand
Reduction (DEDR) a portion of the fines offenders of drunk drivers are charged with.
Annual grants are awarded by the Department of Human Resources of Morris
County.

Mell said the team of about two dozen is constantly working on the programs they
have and are always thinking of new ones to improve the quality of life in Roxbury.

"Everything these members do is for the community," Mell said.  "They are all heroes
to me."

The current members of the alliance are The Rev. Peter Magnan, Karen Mell, Miriam
Morris, Mark Noll, Janet Reith, Eric Rensford, Chris Rogers, David Stierli, Dolores
Tardive, Diane Vanderhoof, Robert Badini, Lori Barnhardt, Lisa Bisson, Randy
Brands, Maureen Castriotta, Marilyn Davis, Betty Lou DeCroce, Lisa DiGiacinto,
Gerry Esposito, Linda Gisonna, Glenn Gordon, Frank Grisi and Jennifer Kenny.

The group is actively seeking volunteers.  For more information on joining ROMAC,
